ANCIENT EGYPT (CA. 3500 - 30 BCE)
Egypt Under the Pharaohs
Ancient Egypt was blessed with ample sources of stone of different hues suitable for carving statues and building blocks. Such resources had made it possible for the Egyptians to build spectacular monuments and artefacts like the Pyramids of Giza, Sphinx, Queen Nefertiti and Death mask of Tutankhamen (above right). Many of them glorify the kings whom they called pharaohs and believed to be divine. The ancient Egyptians devoted enormous resources to erecting countless monuments and status to honour the pharaohs during their lifetimes. They constructed and furnished magnificent tombs to serve their god-kings' eternal homes in the afterlife. |
